this is "world news tonight" with david muir. good evening and it's great to be back with all of you at home after the labor day weekend. we begin with several developing stories tonight. one week until the high-stakes presidential debate right here on abc news. and tonight, the new abc news poll, a very tight race, and who is ahead coming out of labor day? but we do begin tonight with the stunning arrest, a former high-level aide to two new york governors, andrew cuomo and kathy hochul. that aide accused of spying for china. she and her husband now under arrest tonight. linda sun accused of acting as an undisclosed agent, meeting with officials from the chinese communist party. sun and her husband charged in brooklyn federal court, accused of making millions in the scheme. tonight, what they're accused of doing, and what they got for it, allegedly. new york governor kathy hochul expressing outrage tonight, calling it a betrayal of trust. abc's senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky leading us off tonight. >> reporter: tonight, a former aide to two new york governors has been arrested and charged with spying for china. authorities searching the long

island home of linda sun and her husband, chris hu. federal prosecutors say the couple received millions in kickbacks from china and “laundered the monetary proceeds” to buy the mansion in “manhasset, new york, for $3.5 million, a condominium in honolulu, hawaii, for nearly $2 million, and various luxury automobiles, including a ferrari." sun worked for former governor andrew cuomo and his successor governor kathy hochul for more than a decade, and "never disclosed any benefits she received." instead, prosecutors say she "acted as an undisclosed agent" of china, allegedly "blocking representatives of the taiwanese government from having access to the new york state governor's office" and changing the governor's "messaging regarding issues of importance" to the chinese. sun traveled to china, as seen in this photo included in the indictment, where prosecutors say she met with officials from the chinese communist party. she and her family also allegedly received gifts from china, “including tickets to shows, concerts, and events, as well as salted ducks prepared by a chinese government official's personal chef." sun a naturalized u.s. citizen

campaigns. tonight here, the new abc news poll, who now leads in this very close race? rick klein standing by with the numbers. rachel scott on the campaign trail. >> reporter: tonight, with their first debate just one week away, former president donald trump and vice president kamala harris preparing for what could be the most consequential moment of this campaign. in a podcast interview today, trump projecting confidence, while adding a rare acknowledgement that he lost the last election. >> i've done well with debates. i mean, i became president. then the second time, i got millions more votes than i got the first time. i was told if i got 63 million, which is what i got the first time, you would win, you can't not win. and i got millions of more votes than that and lost by a whisker. >> reporter: trump, never a fan of formal debate prep, has been reviewing policy with advisers, including former congresswoman tulsi gabbard, who once challenged harris herself on the debate stage. harris taking a much more formal

approach as she prepares to debate trump in what will be their first face-to-face meeting. >> we know this is going to be a tight race to the very end. it's going to be a tight race to the very end. so let's not pay too much attention to those polls. >> reporter: sources tell abc news harris has done at least two mock debates at her alma mater, howard university. her campaign bringing on hillary clinton's former senior adviser philippe reines, who helped clinton prepare for the 2016 debates, to once again play the role of trump. the vice president knows she has to make up ground on the economy where polls give trump an edge. she's set to roll out a new phase of her agenda in new hampshire tomorrow, focused on building up small businesses by expanding tax deductions. harris positioning herself a champion of the middle class. >> unlike donald trump, i will always put the middle class and working class families first. always.

i come from the middle class. i know what i'm talking about. >> reporter: both the candidates were off the campaign trail today preparing for the debate. and david, tonight, we have learned that former president donald trump is expected to plead not guilty in that new indictment from the special counsel related to his efforts to try to overturn the 2020 election. trump is expected to hold a campaign rally in wisconsin later this week. as for harris, she has a campaign stop in new hampshire, and then she'll travel to pennsylvania on thursday, where she will hunker down until the debate. david? >> david: rachel scott with us on a mon- -- tuesday night. feels like monday, but it is tuesday after labor day. rachel, thank you. let's get right to political director rick klein. rick, this new abc news/ipsos poll shows a very close race coming out of labor day. >> reporter: david, our latest poll with ipsos shows vice president harris with a six-point lead among likely voters. she came out of the democratic convention holding that slight lead nationally. but looking just at the key battleground states, on the day that president biden dropped out, you can see, all seven of the major battlegrounds were tipping red in the fivethirtyeight polling averages. trump leading in all of them, by

as many as seven points in north carolina. fast forward to today, six out of the seven leaning blue. but some of these leads are a virtual tie. look again at north carolina, trump up by less than half a point. david, one dynamic we're watching, a growing gender gap. harris now leading among women by 13 points, that's more than in our last round of polling with ipsos. and trump is up five points overall among men. it all points to a very close race down the stretch. we've heard harris call herself the underdog, and here's one reason why. her lead, not that much different from hillary clinton's in 2016, a race that she went on to lose in the electoral college. it all suggests how close this race is likely to be, and it underscores the stakes of the debate one week from tonight. david? >> david: rick klein. rick, great to have you as always. of course the abc news presidential debate one week from tonight. vice president kamala harris, former president donald trump on that stage. i'll be moderating with our linsey davis. the predebate special, 8:00 p.m., and then the debate itself, right here on abc, 9:00 p.m. eastern, next tuesday night. there are breaking developments in the war in

ukraine tonight. russia with one of the deadliest attacks in this war. ukrainian officials say two ballistic missiles struck a military academy and a nearby hospital in ukraine, killing more than 50 people, wounding hundreds more. here's our foreign correspondent james longman tonight. >> reporter: dozens have been killed in ukraine tonight in one of the deadliest russian attacks since the war began. two ballistic missiles slamming into this military training facility and nearby hospital in poltava, leaving a gaping hole, multiple floors collapsing. the victims had almost no time to react. air raid sirens sounded just as the missiles hit. at least 51 people killed, more than 270 injured. president zelenskyy says rescuers are still searching for survivors in the rubble, and he's vowed to find out why the alert didn't come sooner. meanwhile, inside russia, ukrainian forces continue to push deeper into russia's kursk region. zelenskyy says ukraine will hold that territory for leverage, part of a victory plan he'll present to the united states. but russia also on the move in

ukraine's eastern donbas region, slowly gaining ground. and david, ukraine has been pressing the biden administration for permission to fire u.s.-made weapons deeper inside russia. so far, the answer is no. david? >> david: james longman, thank you. tonight, the images coming in from israel. thousands in the streets again tonight, following the killings of six hostages in gaza, including israeli american hersh goldberg-polin. israel revealing they believe the hostages were killed just 48 to 72 hours before they were discovered. marcus moore inside israel again tonight. >> reporter: mounting pressure and new unrest tonight in israel, after hamas executed six hostages, including 23-year-old israeli american hersh goldberg-polin. israeli authorities revealing they believe the hostages were killed just 48 to 72 hours before their bodies were found in hamas tunnels underneath gaza. demonstrators flooding the streets of israel for a third straight night. we have followed the story of

hostage hersh goldberg-polin since the october 7th attack. just days later, his parents telling david he was at that music festival, hiding in a bomb shelter with friends. his parents found an image of him, his arm had been blown off by a hamas grenade. for two parents from chicago, who moved to jerusalem, there has been no sleep. rachel and jonathan goldberg-polin's young son hersh, who just turned 23, was celebrating his birthday at the music festival, where young people soon began to run for their lives. they told david about the last two text messages from their son. "i love you" and "i'm sorry." >> and there were two messages in a row at 8:11. the first one said "i love you" and the second one said "i'm sorry." so i immediately knew something terrible had happened. i tried immediately to call him and it rang and rang and rang. i wrote, "are you okay?" no answer.

let me know you're okay." and so that's the last time we heard from him, was at 8:11 saturday morning. >> and those two words, "i'm sorry." >> and i keep saying it's okay. we haven't slept. i mean, when i have these quiet moments at night i kept saying it's okay. it's okay. and i hope -- and i keep saying i'm sending every ounce of my strength. stay alive. >> reporter: in recent weeks, they learned their son was still alive, but then this weekend, the awful news. hersh's mother rachel at his funeral. >> finally, finally, finally, finally you're free! i will love you and i will miss you every single day for the rest of my life. but you're right here, i know you're right here, i just have to teach myself how to feel you in a different way. >> reporter: and david, back to the cease-fire negotiations,

prime minister netanyahu not budging, despite calls for him to agree to remove israeli soldiers from gaza's southern border with egypt. and there's breaking news tonight from the department of justice. they are charging several top members of hamas for their role in the kidnapping and murders of americans on october 7th. david? >> david: we're thinking about the family of hersh goldberg-polin and all the families of those hostages. marcus, thank you. we turn now to the horrific attack on two u.s. marines in turkey, the troubling images tonight. a mob placing a bag over the head of one of the marines. tonight martha raddatz here and what she's learned. >> reporter: it was a stunning incident captured on tape. a mob attacking a u.s. marine in civilian clothes in western turkey, forcing a bag over his head. >> help! help! >> reporter: when a fellow marine jumped in to help, he was grabbed as well, with the attackers yelling in english, "yankee go home." >> yankee go home! >> reporter: local police and

some nearby marines in turkey on a port call quickly intervened, and the attackers, who identify as nationalists opposed to u.s. influence, were arrested. >> this is clearly a troubling incident. in terms of the reaction of the marines, certainly very proud of the professionalism of our service members, and most importantly, that they're safe. >> reporter: the marines were not injured, but taken to the hospital as a precaution. then returned to the warship. the "uss wasp" arrived in the aegean sea port on sunday, after taking part in training exercises with turkish forces. this is not the first time turkish nationalist groups like this have attacked u.s. service members. most of those incidents, including this one, said to be in protest of u.s. policy in the middle east. david? >> david: martha raddatz live in washington. thank you, martha. meanwhile, here in the u.s. tonight, a heartbroken sister is now breaking her silence after the tragic deaths of her brothers, one of them an nhl star. both were accomplished hockey

players. they were killed by an alleged drunk driver the night before the sister's wedding. here's trevor ault. >> reporter: tonight, the younger sister of nhl star johnny gaudreau and matthew gaudreau opening up about her devastating loss. both brothers killed just hours before her wedding. katie gaudreau posting on instagram, "there are absolutely no words i have to express the bond my family shared. the absolute best big brothers a little girl could have asked for." the gaudreau brothers were riding their bikes thursday night near their new jersey hometown when they were struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver. johnny carving out an impressive career with the calgary flames and columbus blue jackets. >> five points tonight, johnny. >> yeah. >> reporter: the team honoring the 31-year-old husband and father of two, known as johnny hockey, in this video. >> i always look forward to these weekends. i bring my whole family in. doesn't matter where it is. >> reporter: matthew gaudreau also played several years of pro hockey, later becoming a high school coach. his wife madeline, due with
